Supporting cockpit smoke protection across business aviation through certified installation and technical support

Cockpit smoke events are rare. But when they happen, the conditions change within seconds.

A pilot encountering dense smoke must continue controlling the aircraft, read instruments, follow emergency procedures, and communicate with ATC, all while visibility is reduced or lost entirely. Standard smoke evacuation procedures address many situations, but they do not address all of them. When smoke generation continues and the source has not been isolated, pilots need an additional layer of protection.

EVAS has a 30+ year track record and is trusted by more than 4,500 aircraft worldwide, leading the category in cockpit smoke safety. It deploys in seconds, runs on alkaline batteries independent of aircraft power, and stows in the space of a navigation manual. Every system is backed by a comprehensive 10-year warranty.

JetSupport has now been appointed an official dealer and service center for EVAS®, a VisionSafe product — the Emergency Vision Assurance System designed to restore cockpit visibility during smoke events in business aviation aircraft.

It starts with understanding what the system does and how it reduces cognitive load, allowing crews to aviate, navigate, and communicate as trained.

What EVAS Does

EVAS is a tested and certified system designed to maintain pilot vision during cockpit smoke events. The system works by deploying an inflatable vision unit that fills with filtered air, creating a clear zone between the pilot and the critical instruments and forward windscreen.

The unit inflates in 30 to 60 seconds. It filters incoming air to 0.3 microns and operates independently of aircraft power for a minimum of two hours using a self-contained battery supply. When stowed, the entire system occupies roughly the same space as a navigation manual and weighs approximately 2.5 kilograms.

EVAS does not replace the oxygen mask or smoke goggles. It works alongside them. The pilot breathes through the standard emergency oxygen system and uses EVAS to maintain visual contact with the instruments and flight path.

The Operational Reality Behind The System

Cockpit smoke and fume events are more common than most operators expect.

According to FAA Service Difficulty Reports, over 1,200 smoke and fume incidents were reported on US aircraft in 2023 alone. One in three of those incidents requires an emergency landing. The Flight Safety Foundation ranks smoke and fire emergencies as the third highest cause of aviation fatalities globally.

For business aviation operators, these numbers carry weight. A smoke event on a long-range aircraft over water or in low-visibility conditions is not an abstract risk. It is a situation where every second of reduced pilot visibility increases the operational and safety exposure.

Certified Across The Business Aviation Fleet

EVAS is certified across more than 120 aircraft types from 10 manufacturers, covering the majority of the business aviation fleet in active operation. EASA certification makes the system relevant for European operators and maintainers.

Bombardier, Dassault Falcon Jet, and Gulfstream Aerospace have all designated EVAS as either standard equipment or a standard client option. Gulfstream includes EVAS as standard on the G650 and as an option on the G700 and G800. The FAA has equipped EVAS on all of its own aircraft.

For operators whose aircraft are not yet equipped, retrofit installation is available and straightforward to integrate into planned maintenance events via JetSupport.

JetSupport's Role As Dealer And Service Center

As an authorised EVAS®, a VisionSafe product, dealer and service center, JetSupport supports operators with system procurement, installation, and ongoing certification support across the business jet types in its maintenance scope.

JetSupport operates EASA Part 145 approved maintenance facilities at Amsterdam Schiphol, Munich Oberpfaffenhofen, Paris Le Bourget, and Nice Côte d'Azur. This European network allows operators to address EVAS installation as part of scheduled maintenance without additional ferry flights or unplanned downtime.

The installation process is designed to fit within existing maintenance planning. JetSupport handles the technical coordination, certification paperwork, and integration documentation, giving operators clear visibility into timelines and costs before work begins.

A Safety Modification That Fits The Maintenance Process

For operators, safety modifications create value when they integrate cleanly into the maintenance programme.

EVAS installation at JetSupport is handled within the same framework as any other certified modification: clear planning, direct communication, and predictable completion. Operators leave with a system in service, documentation complete, and no unresolved certification items.

Cockpit smoke protection is not a precaution against an unlikely scenario. It is a response to a documented and recurring operational risk. EVAS addresses that risk with a certified, proven system. JetSupport now supports operators across Europe in making that protection part of their aircraft.
